This position is located in Newport News, VA. 

How BKE Internships Work

Interns are expected to work a minimum of 4 days per week, approximately 30-35 hours. Positions at BKE are awarded an hourly rate of $10-12/hour depending on your transportation needs. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. This internship is suitable for those who are looking for new experiences in the accounting and finance industry during their summer months. Those working towards a major in accounting, finance and/or economics will receive the most benefit from our mentoring. Interns will work with our Solutions Team, which is comprised of Process Accountants and Analysts with different responsibilities. Full-time positions or extended internships may be awarded to those who qualify.

Responsibilities

  • Full cycle processing of payables and receivables utilizing full range of QuickBooks and/or Xero capabilities
  • Reconciliations of bank, credit card, vendor and customer balances
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and processes throughout the bookkeeping cycle
  • Month-end close process
  • Journal entry preparation and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
  • Knowledge of accrual method of accounting and prepaid/deferred revenue schedules
  • Follow-up and management of outstanding client documentation
  • Ability to complete high quality client work within a tight timeframe
  • Multi-task and self-start in order to manage and prioritize multiple client requirements
  • Outstanding organizational skills needed to be able to manage and plan client work
  • Demonstrate a flexible attitude in response to changing client needs or requests
  • Ability to manage clients and operate in virtual environment with use of E-filing workflow

Qualifications

  • Up to 1 year of finance/accounting experience: either through internship or other extracurricular activity
  • Understanding of the balance sheet and income statement and the nature of their accounts
  • Strong written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills and experience with Excel and other MS Office applications
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to handle client work in a friendly and professional manner
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Exceptional analytical skills
  • Orbital thinker (vs linear thinker) preferred
  • Experience in the preparation of tax returns, sales tax reporting and understanding of entity types not required but very helpful
  • Experience with other Accounting software packages a plus.
  • Knowledge and understanding of GAAP accounting a plus
