Do You Need an Accountant or a Bookkeeper?

Many small businesses seek to hire a certified public accountant when all they really need are the services of a Certified Bookkeeper. Yes, there are some things that will require the services of a CPA.  But most of the day-to-day accounting tasks such as getting you accurate financial statements, setting up charts of accounts, maximize depreciation, setting up general ledgers, monthly data entry, and managing your A/R and A/P can be done by a certified bookkeeper for substantially less than an accountant.

What are the differences between an accountant and a bookkeeper?

An accountant should be used for tax and audit work. But expect them to charge as much as $250.00 per hour. They may not be necessary for daily or routine tasks such as the duties listed above, so it makes sense to look to the Certified Bookkeeper to complete those tasks for substantially less.

A certified bookkeeper can:

•    Help you with financial statements and tax returns
•    Find and correct errors with your books, bank statements and trial balance
•    Handle your company’s payroll
•    Setup and maintain depreciation schedules
•    Record and cost out inventory
•    Setup internal controls to reduce and identify fraud
